Education

Altus Public Schools

The Altus Public School District is made up of four elementary schools, an intermediate school, a junior high, a high school, and a learning center.  Serving a population of around 3,782 students, Altus Schools maintains a student/teacher ratio of 14.9/1 and has a budget of $27.5 million. Members of the community are diligently supportive of Altus Schools by participating in our volunteer programs, forming business partnerships with our schools, and serving as mentors.  The average Altus teacher has been in the classroom for 14.6 years and 28.1 percent of our teachers hold a Master's level or greater degree.

Covering an area of 263 square miles with 230 square miles in the transportation area, Altus Public Schools owns 143 acres and occupies 50 buildings at 10 sites. Eight of these sites are secondary and elementary schools, and the remaining are an administrative center and a learning center.  The school district also owns a transportation facility, athletic fields, a vocational agriculture farm, storage facilities, and other auxiliary buildings. All schools and offices are fully air-conditioned and are well-maintained.

  • Rivers Elementary (located on Altus Air Force Base) was recently ranked in the top 5 schools in the entire state by a study that examined Reading, Math, and Science test scores as well as student-teacher ratios. Rivers was also named a 2016 National Blue Ribbon School, and the Principal a national award recipient.
  • Altus Schools continue to earn outstanding grades in the state's A-F grading system for schools, with Rivers Elementary routinely earning one of the highest scores in the state.
  • Altus High School student ACT scores consistently outperform the state average in every subject area as well as in the composite scores, and the margin is growing as Altus ACT scores continue to rise. Altus High school has produced a 2016 National Merit Scholar, a 2016 National Merit Commended Student, a 2017 Oklahoma Academic All-Stater and a 2017 National Coca-Cola Scholar. 
  • Altus third graders enjoy a passage rate of over 97% on the state reading sufficiency exam, 12 percentage points better than the state average.    

 

Altus Christian Academy

Altus is home to Altus Christian Academy, an outstanding private school which offers classes for PRE-K 3 YEAR OLD THROUGH 6TH GRADE students. ACA boasts a maximum student to classroom teacher ratio of 10:1 for Pre-K 3's, 12:1 for Pre-K 4's through 1st grade, and 14:1 for 2nd grade and up. Altus Christian Academy is accredited by the Association of Christian Schools International which is recognized by the Oklahoma State Department of Education. ACA lead teachers meet ACSI certification requirements which include biblical training as well as the appropriate academic background.

ACA offers music, P.E., and art as a regular part of the curriculum while also providing opportunities for students to compete in Spelling Bee, Math Olympics, speech contest, science fair, ​and ​boy's and girl's basketball. ACA emphasizes learning outside the classroom through field trips to places like the Regional Food Bank, Oklahoma City Philharmonic Youth Concert, Western Oklahoma State College Science Club, Chisholm Trail Heritage Center, as well as a variety of local service projects.

Career Tech

Providing full time programs, short term classes, and a myriad of business and industry services, Southwest Technology Center is dedicated to quality and committed to helping people become successful.  Southwest Technology Center serves individuals, business and industry through flexible, quality training, thus enhancing the economy and quality of life in our communities.

Adult and Career Development programs at SWTC provide for personal success and advancement by helping one gain the skills needed to quickly transition to the workforce, develop new and emerging job skills, and enhance career development to succeed in today’s workplace. These programs are offered through short-term quality curriculum and instruction responding to industry needs on a real-time, flexible and innovative basis.  Adult short term programs allow for career development, continuing education, certification in many areas and personal enrichment.

Southwest Technology’s Business Development Center is an economic development team that provides assistance, support and training in a wide variety of business programs. They understand that productivity and profit matter and through their consulting and training opportunities they are available to help a business achieve their goals.  The economic development team will work with a company considering locating in Oklahoma, an existing company, both large and small businesses, or an entrepreneur just getting started with a new business idea.  Assistance for businesses is available to train and retool workers or train a new workforce or to provide consulting and resources needed for business success.

The full-time programs at SWTC offer high school and adult students the opportunity to become certified in their respective field of study. From Practical Nursing to Welding to FAA A&P Mechanics there are a multitude of certifications offered in the 10 training programs. With record enrollment for the FY17 year, SWTC graduated the largest class to date, resulting in 150 certifications.

 

Higher Education

Established as Altus Junior College in 1926, Western Oklahoma State College is the oldest original municipal two-year college still in existence in Oklahoma, serving the greater Southwestern Oklahoma community for decades.  Providing a comprehensive two-year post-secondary educational program for its residents, Western offers Associates degrees in Arts, Science, or Applied Science, with several majors offered under each degree.  In addition, cooperative agreements with other institutions allow students continue their education to the Bachelors Degree level and beyond, many times without ever having to leave Altus.

Western Oklahoma State College exists for students. The college, with its board, administration, faculty, and staff, is committed to student success, strengthening the community, technology development, and internal and external cooperation. It affirms equal access to all aspects of the institution for the diverse population it serves and approaches all endeavors with the highest standards of ethics and professionalism - a commitment to excellence.

WOSC provides a traditional college atmosphere including many student clubs and campus activities. The college offers several sports programs including: Baseball, Softball, Men and Women's Basketball, Men and Women's Rodeo and Cheerleading.

In addition to an outstanding community and residential campus, Western Oklahoma State College offers educational opportunities at a distance. WOSC delivers distance learning opportunities in a variety of convenient ways for you to access education, regardless of where you reside.
